Yellowstone is one of the most unpredictable places to pack for.
Mornings can feel like fall, afternoons feel like summer, and evenings drop fast once the sun goes down. We’ve hosted enough guests at our cabin near Island Park to see the same pattern over and over—people either underpack layers or bring the wrong kind of clothing entirely.
This guide walks you through what to actually wear in Yellowstone, based on real conditions and real trips.
Summer temps often range:
- Morning: 30s–40s°F
- Afternoon: 70s–80s°F
- Evening: drops quickly
High elevation = fast changes
We love our trips to Yellowstone, and this is what’s in my suitcase (steal these tips!).
The Layering System
Base Layer (comfort)
- Breathable t-shirt or long sleeve
- Moisture-wicking if possible
Mid Layer (warmth)
- Fleece or hoodie
- Light sweater
Outer Layer (protection)
- Lightweight jacket or windbreaker
Don’t forget to pack good socks, especially if you are hiking. Wool socks like these ones (amazing brand, crafted in Vermont), will keep your feet at the right temp all day.
We’re also big fans of bringing Chacos in the summer months. The soles are great for hiking, but perfect for a rafting trip or a float down Big Springs in Island Park.
What People Regret Not Bringing
- Extra socks
- A real jacket (not just a hoodie)
- Layers for kids
- Sunglasses + sunscreen

Cabin Comfort
After a full day in the park, what you wear back at the cabin matters just as much. Make sure you bring:
- Cozy socks
- Soft layers
- Comfortable lounge clothes
