Planning a trip to Yellowstone sounds simple until you realize the weather changes by the hour. Mornings are cold, afternoons are warm, and evenings can drop fast.

After hosting guests at our cabin near Island Park, we’ve seen exactly what people wish they had packed—and what they didn’t need at all.

This is the Yellowstone packing list we actually recommend:

Clothing Items

  • Hat + sunglasses: Biased toward these. They aren’t spendy, so you won’t grieve if you lose them — but they look super cute.
  • Gloves! Don’t forget these. It can snow in July. Pack ’em just in case.

Hiking + Outdoor Gear

What NOT to Overpack

  • Too many outfits
  • Fancy shoes — there is nowhere to wear them. But cowboy boots are welcome!
